ABOUT KIDNEY FOUNDATION

Kidney Foundation Sylhet is a dream project of Professor Ziauddin Ahmed, a kidney specialist since 1986 and Professor of Medicine and Nephrology at Drexel University, Philadelphia, USA. He is the son of Shaheed Professor Shamsuddin Ahmed FRCS, who was professor and head of surgery at Sylhet Medical College. He was martyred during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 while treating patients inside the hospital under brutal attack by the Pakistani army.

Three visionary individuals: Mr. Jahin Ahmed, Prof. Zia Uddin Ahmed, MD, FASN, and Colonel (Retd.) Mohammad Abdus Salam, Bir Protik — who resolved to create a charitable institution dedicated to improving renal healthcare in Sylhet. Their initiative was deeply inspired by Mrs. Hosn Ara Ahmed, the esteemed mother of Dr. Zia Uddin Ahmed, a distinguished educationalist and former Principal of Sylhet Women’s College. The founders also drew encouragement and strategic guidance from the late Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, a true legend and one of Bangladesh’s most respected development leaders.

The foundation and the hospital are nonprofit initiatives established to provide prevention, awareness, and treatment of kidney diseases. The center plays a critical role in training healthcare workers, conducting outreach programs, and delivering clinical services to underserved populations.

Professor Harun Ur Rashid, Founder President of Kidney Foundation Bangladesh, Dhaka, and his team supported this project by providing technical expertise and strategic guidance. Operations began as the Foundation rented a 12000 square feet centre at Shahjalal Uposhohor and fully renovated it with modern design for a state of art dialysis center, outpatient clinic and a modern medical laboratory. The project developed into a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) Hospital with the Government of Bangladesh, where the government contributed 80% of construction costs and the remaining was raised through private donors, including international philanthropists.
