BRIEF OF THE PROJECT

Kidney Foundation Hospital Sylhet (KFHS) is a not-for-profit, specialized renal care hospital established to address the rising burden of kidney disease in the Sylhet region and beyond. It is governed by the Kidney Foundation Sylhet Trust and operates in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Bangladesh, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

KFHS began its journey in 2017 with a temporary dialysis center in Uposhahar, Sylhet, offering subsidized dialysis services. The overwhelming demand for kidney care led to the vision of a full-fledged hospital.

A 60-decimal land plot in Temukhi, Sylhet, was generously donated by philanthropist Mr. Zubair Ahmed Chowdhury and family. Construction of a state-of-the-art 200-bed renal hospital began in 2018, with completion in 2024.

The hospital officially opened in January 2025, inaugurated by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. It now houses one of the largest dialysis centers in Bangladesh outside Dhaka, with 37 dialysis machines running three shifts daily.

Total project investment was approximately BDT 36 crore (USD 3.6 million), of which USD 2 million was funded by the Government and the remaining by private donors and international philanthropists.

KFHS has already delivered over 70,000 dialysis sessions since inception and now performs 75+ sessions daily, with over 55% provided free or subsidized. It also operates outpatient clinics, laboratory and imaging services, and inpatient nephrology wards.

Strategic partnerships with BRAC, Kidney Foundation Bangladesh, and international organizations have strengthened KFHS’s service delivery and outreach.

Future plans (2025–2030) include the launch of a Kidney Transplant Unit, expansion of ICU and critical care, a Medical College wing, digital tele-nephrology, and a local pharmaceutical unit for nephrology-related medicine and supplies.
